Summer Reading

for students entering the Enrichment 8th grade

Language Arts Class

1.     Read the book Anne Frank, The Diary of a Young Girl

(published by Bantam Books with an Introduction by Eleanor Roosevelt)

As you read, keep a black & white marble notebook journal:

Use a separate page for each journal entry. You may write on the back of pages.

Read the Introduction and the Afterword first, before starting the diary.

Write a short summary of the Afterword at the beginning of your journal.

The Afterword is divided into three sections (I, II, III) and you should write at least one page for each section.(This will help you to understand what was going on in the world at the time Anne and her family went into hiding.)

As you read Anne’s diary keep a journal entry for each date Anne wrote in her diary:

·         Write the date of Anne’s entry at the top of the page.

·         Write a paragraph summarizing in your own words what Anne wrote about that day. This should be the most important events or main ideas, not a lot of descriptions or details.

·         Write at least one new vocabulary word from that day’s entry that you did not know, and write the definition for that word.

·         Write the current date, and then write a few sentences about what is happening in your own life that day.

Sample Journal Page.

Tuesday, 27 April, 1943

Everyone is the house was arguing that day.

There have been air raids on Germany.  They don’t have any quiet nights. Anne thinks this is good because it might mean an invasion is coming. She thinks their food is terrible and if someone wanted to lose weight they should come stay in the “Secret Annexe.

Fortnight (noun) a period of two weeks.

June 10, 2009

Today I slept until 12:30 and then watched TV until 2:00.  I texted my friends until my mom got home and made me read for 20 minutes.  Tomorrow I am going to the mall with my friends.

Write neatly, in cursive, using a blue or black erasable pen.

Do your own work. No one else should be writing for you or telling you what to write.  Be sure your name in on the front of your journal.

If you have questions you may email me at leighille@yahoo.com over the summer.

2.               Read at least one book from either of the booklists below.

The book must be within your AR reading level.

You do not have to write a book report, but be prepared to take the AR quiz on the book the first day you return to school.
