Seventh Grade Summer Reading Project

Ms. Whitaker’s Language Arts

Welcome to the seventh grade!  Summer is a great time for all of us to rest and relax.  Unfortunately, summer always ends and it is time for school once again.  To keep you in the school “mode” please read the following book over the summer and complete the attached assignment.

City of Ember

By

Jeanne DuPrau

You may want to purchase your own copy of the book.  You will have no trouble finding it.  In addition to the assignment, please keep the following things in mind as you read the book.

·        Be prepared to hand in your completed assignment the first week of school.

·        Assignments may be hand written or typed (double spaced).  Please make sure that handwritten reports are clearly written and easy to read.

·        There will be two or three post-reading activities based on the book during the first marking period.  You will have to read the book in order to complete these assignments!

·        Be prepared for an Accelerated Reader test based on The City of Ember during the first two weeks of school.

Enjoy the books and your summer!

Book in a . . .  Project

Select a book report container.  This may be a bag, box, envelope, or anything that would be appropriate.  Decorate the outside of your container to show major events or themes found in the book.  You may draw pictures, use magazine picture, clip art, etc.

The following items must be included in your container.

     1.  A summary of the book. Include the following information:

              - Title and Author

              - Main Characters

              - Setting

              - Plot including the conflict, turning point, and resolution

     2.  Things – In the container should be at least 5 things that have

a connection to the story.  Be creative with your items.

     3.  Explanations – A brief explanation of how the item is related

to the story should be attached to each thing.
