Summer Reading

for students entering the Enrichment 7th grade

Language Arts Class

1.     Read the book The Yearling by Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings

(AR Reading Level 5, 19 points) Published by Simon and Shuster, Inc 2001

You will need a pocket and prong folder with loose leaf to use as a reading log.

As you finish each chapter, write a short, one to two paragraph summary, in your own words. This should include the most important events and main ideas, not a lot of description or details.

There are 33 chapters.

After the summary, write one new vocabulary word from the chapter, and write the definition

When you finish the book, write a book report that includes:

·        Description of the Setting (when and where the story takes place)

·        Character descriptions (physical and character traits)

·        Problem/Conflict in the story

·        Plot summary. This is where you write a complete summary of the story from the beginning, through the middle, to the end.

If you have done your chapter summaries as you read then you basically have what you need to write the plot summary.

·        Resolution (how was the Problem/Conflict solved?)

·        Conclusion (How did the story end?)

Book reports must be written on loose leaf, complete heading, in paragraph form, in complete sentences.

Reports must be hand written neatly, in cursive, in blue or black ink. No scribbles or scratched out mistakes.  Feel free to use erasable pen, but be neat.

The book report will also count as the first writing grade of the new school year, so check your spelling and grammar.  Have someone proofread so you can correct any errors.

Do your own work, no one should be writing for you or telling you what to write. Place the book report in the pocket and prong folder behind the Chapter Summaries.

Be prepared to take the AR quiz on The Yearling the first day you return to school.

If you have questions you may email me at leighille@yahoo.com over the summer.

2.               Read at least one book from either of the booklists below.

The book must be within your AR reading level.

You do not have to write a book report, but be prepared to take the AR quiz on the book the first day you return to school.
